Intrinsically Safe Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

Our customer required an intrinsically safe hand held device to measure accurately the thickness of metal structures such as pipelines and fixed equipment within hazardous locations.

A2E developed all the electronics hardware and software to realise the product. An ultrasound system was employed for the measurement methodology. The user interface was composed of a soft key interface and a TFT display. An RFID tag reader was integrated allowing the user to confirm he is carrying out measurements in the correct location. Low power design rules were essential to maximise battery life.  A2E’s engineers liaised with certification bodies to ensure rapid approval. The device was ATEX & IECEx certified approved for operation in zone 1 IIC T4 environments.
