RoHs

The Directive became EU law on 13th February 2003. It bans the use of six different materials, including lead from all new products put on to the market after the 1st July 2006.

A similar law will be introduced in California in 2007, with other US States and countries likely to follow.

How does this affect existing products?

Component manufacturers are removing non-compliant parts from their inventory and are replacing these with new parts, which are not always compatible with the previous part. This is causing problems for OEMs where parts are becoming obsolete making products difficult to manufacture. Products will need to be re-designed to overcome part End of Life issues.

Project Example - OSD Device Obsolescence for Video Processing Card

Our customer used a Genesis device in their video application to provide On Screen Display (OSD) features for their product. The Genesis device used had become obsolete. A2E replaced the Genesis device and an associated Altera APEX device with OSD functionality in an Altera Cyclone II FPGA. Some additional video processing features were also added to the Cyclone II FPGA to provide functionality enhancements for the product.
